Enjoying the Ride

In our new "plan," there will now no longer be a blog post telling you what we plan to do.  There is no set plan any longer other than good quality outdoor time, reading time, and habit training every week.  Instead, my new goal is just to blog about what we did that week, and how that shaped our lives.  We may find that we incorporate some crafts (as we did this week) or did something a little more out of the ordinary, but mainly our focus will be enjoying one another and taking time to cherish these years before formal schooling begins.

We were thrown off this week by both sicknesses and snow.  Before these things made their debut though, we were blessed to have a good friend visiting us from our college days. I plan to blog more about that on our family blog.  We did do a lot of parks though over the weekend, which was fun for all of us.  Here are a few pictures of our weekend.  Our friend, Lem, took a ton of pictures of us that are much better than anything you can see here.  Check out his flickr page!

Unfortunately, we all got sick and the snow started coming down on Tuesday. This made for a lot of indoor time, but the boys (especially Little Buddy) wanted to go outside as much as possible to play.  Despite my lack of enthusiasm for the chill, we did make it out on a few occasions much to their delight.

We also did a lot of sleeping.  Little Buddy hasn't been napping for the last few months, but he took a nap everyday this week to fight off his sickness.

Little Buddy and I also are enjoying our uninterrupted reading time in the middle of the day.  Soon after Button goes down for his nap, we pull out our The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter and read one of the stories from it. I know a lot of it goes over his head, but he has a lot of patience for it since he enjoys looking at all the beautiful pictures on the pages.  He often asks me what is going on or wonders why something I read isn't shown in the pictures.  I love this time because we get to spend quality time together without a one-year old trying to turn the pages before we are ready or taking away the book.

Other fun things that happened this week...

We watched the space shuttle launch from the comfort of our own home.  Little Buddy was so excited.  He kept asking if it was flying yet.  I doubt he would have asked that once he actually saw it happen!  It was interesting trying to explain terms he was hearing like "orbit" and "astronaut".  Apparently, we haven't talked much about space yet.

We got a fun package in the mail from Lem with a gorgeous picture of our family in it.  I loved the picture.  The boys loved the packaging (of course!).  They played with the box, the bubble-wrap, and used the brown paper as a table protector while doing finger paints!  So much fun!

Can you find Little Buddy?

"I'm making candy, Mommy"

Button decided that he wants to be potty-trained, and enjoys sitting on the potty.  He already brings me his diaper when he needs to be changed.  Why won't my three-year old do this?  (Ok, so I considered putting a picture up of this.  You'll just have to use your imagination... or not.)

Finally, just because I think this is cute.  We decided to have an impromptu photo shoot with all the boys' "friends" on the couch.  After getting some cute shots, we played a game where they tried to throw them all on the ground faster than I could get them back up!

Yay for enjoying the ride!

Little Disciples

As I've been learning more about Charlotte Mason and her methods, I've been thinking especially about what she means by "Education is a Discipline."  As I was reading her thoughts on discipline from her Homeschooling series, I was particularly struck by the following quotation. Discipline is not Punishment ––What is discipline? Look at the word; there is no hint of punishment in it. A disciple is a follower, and discipline is the state of the follower; the learner, imitator. Mothers and fathers do not well to forget that their children are, by the very order of Nature, their disciples... How Disciples are Lured ––He who would draw disciples does not trust to force; but to these three things–– to the attraction of his doctrine, to the persuasion of his presentation, to the enthusiasm of his disciples ; so the parent has teachings of the perfect life which he knows how to present continually with winning force until the children are quickened with such zeal for virtue...

Styrofoam Tray Shrink Art

Making styrofoam shrink art was one of those fun childhood memories I have from being a kid.  My mom would clean off the meat or veggie trays from the grocery store, give it to us kids to draw on, then we would watch in awe as our creations shrunk before our very eyes in the oven. I really wanted to do the same thing with my kids so I (silly-me) tried to find a tutorial of the sort on the Internet.  I did this mostly because I didn't know the temperature the oven needed to be or how long it should be in there.  Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't find one!  The closest thing I found was this website , but there were no pictures or anything.  I decided to wing it - it couldn't be that hard, right? And, yes, this craft is super easy.  First, I gave the boys a clean tray and a bunch of markers for them to draw with. I had to convince them to color a lot  since they were only making small markings. We put their creations on an aluminum-covered bak...

A Brand New House

Another major thing we did while my parents were here last week was a major room change in our house.  It feels like a brand new home!  We have a play room, the boys are now sharing a room, and Phil and I have moved into Button's old room (which was really the library/office/nursery/catch-all room).  I am so excited!!!   I finally feel settled into this home since there is finally a place (or at least a room) for everything.  The boys seem to really love sharing a room, and they are actually going to sleep better than they were when they were separate.  It's fantastic. By far, I'm most excited about our play room.  This room comes right off the kitchen, and it used to be our master bedroom.  Now, we have our books and toys in it which keeps our living room so. much. cleaner.  This room will eventually become our homeschool room with some minor improvements in a couple of years.  In the meantime, we are enjoying the extra space to play ...
