A Brand New House

Another major thing we did while my parents were here last week was a major room change in our house.  It feels like a brand new home!  We have a play room, the boys are now sharing a room, and Phil and I have moved into Button's old room (which was really the library/office/nursery/catch-all room).  I am so excited!!!  I finally feel settled into this home since there is finally a place (or at least a room) for everything.  The boys seem to really love sharing a room, and they are actually going to sleep better than they were when they were separate.  It's fantastic.

By far, I'm most excited about our play room.  This room comes right off the kitchen, and it used to be our master bedroom.  Now, we have our books and toys in it which keeps our living room so. much. cleaner.  This room will eventually become our homeschool room with some minor improvements in a couple of years.  In the meantime, we are enjoying the extra space to play and just hang out.  There's still a bit of work to do (get rid of the boxes going to Goodwill and buying a computer desk for the corner), but I'm thrilled with its possibilities.

Still need to organize that dresser and get rid of those boxes...

One of my favorite spots - a reading nook next to the bookcase with our artist study picture above it.

Here is the new and improved boy's room.  Eventually, we will get rid of the crib, and the boys will share the bunk.

And finally, our bedroom.  It's kind of the catch-all until I get some projects completed.  I have things up above that need to get sold on craigslist, other things that need organizing before they can get put in storage, etc.  I also want to put up some book shelves on the empty wall space for us to put some of our own books on.

It feels so good to get these rooms moved around.  Thanks again Grandma and Papa for all your hard work with this.  We couldn't have done it without you.

  1. Your house looks great! To answer your question about violin lessons, I think Suzuki lessons are a great option for quite young kids, if you can find the right teacher. I've taught kids as young as four and really enjoy working with young ones. I would suggest you look into the Suzuki method - it's based on the concept that children can learn music the way they learn their native language, from hearing and absorbing it from their parents and their environment, rather than learning to read music first and then play it. (Just as we teach reading and writing after children have already naturally learned to speak.) I have a lot of 5-8 year old beginner students; I'd say 6-7 is a very common age to begin. Hope this helps! Let me know if you get your children involved in music lessons. I think it would be wonderful.

  2. Thanks so much, Sarah! Buddy really is interested in learning the violin at some point. He likes listening for it in Classical music, and one of his uncle plays. I'm thinking that it might be a good time to start in first grade (making him 6 1/2). Too bad you can't be his teacher!

  3. That is so inspiring! I'm changing our old office/guestroom into a toddler bedroom/guestroom with two twin beds. I'm in the part where everything is torn apart and it's hard to see the light, so this success was exactly what I needed to see for some encouragement to finish! Great job Alisha!

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
