Living Math

Every once in a while, I get asked how our preschool is going at home.  I'm not usually sure how to answer that.  We've come a long way from me making up lesson plans each week or even trying to do a little "school" each day.  Part of this is just trying to enjoy the little years with my kids.  Part of it was that it was just too much for mom and kids.  Instead, I now look for the teachable moments in our day.  Things like explaining why it is polite to sit still while eating or not to talk with your mouth full.  Like why it is important to wash your hands after using the bathroom.  Or how to help clean the toilet or "mop" the floor.  Or how to zip a zipper.  Or why it is important to be nice to people and think of them more highly than yourself.  Or why we should pray for the redemption of "bad people".

Academics?  Well, there are definitely things we are learning in that regard too, but I don't really plan for them so much anymore.  Some weeks we'll just read books together.  We usually read at least a half hour a day if not longer.  We still talk about letters and sound out words on occasion.  We do science experiments whenever Buddy grabs the science book out of our bookshelf and asks to do one.  We work on writing since Buddy is infatuated with making signs.  But one of our more recent endeavors is living math.  Basically, I've just been picking books from the library that illustrate some math concept.  Buddy and Button both love the fun stories and have picked up some skip-counting and addition/subtraction concepts.

Here are some of our favorites:

We also enjoy playing games together.  Hi-Ho Cherry-O and Sum Swamp are two of our favorite math games.  Other times we play with our Block Buddies, Dominoes, Jenga pieces and Pattern Blocks - not necessarily with any particular end in mind except to have fun!

Life is more relaxed than it has been, and I'm okay with that.  Buddy is still a year away from kindergarten, and I'd rather him be a boy with godly character than a smarty pants.

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
