Car Games

There are some things that I know I'll forget as time goes on if I don't write them down.  One of these is my boys' recent obsession with playing games in the car.  They are such chatterboxes in the car that we have tried to harness the crazy nonsense into games.  Sometimes (often?) this just makes for more structured crazy nonsense, but at least I get to join in, right?  So, here are some of the more favorite games...

The "Say What You Are, and the Name of It" Game
This is a Buddy-original.  In this game, you just pick anything and say that you are it.  A fence, squirrel, paper, etc. are all legitimate options.  It usually goes something like this.
Buddy: "Let's play the 'say what you are, and the name of it' game.  I'm a car!"
Button (giggling histerically): "I'm a car!" (We're still in the copy-cat stage).
Buddy: "Mommy, what are you?"
Mommy: "I'm a tree."
(Another round of giggles)
You'd think that there would be two-parts to this game with the word "and" being used in the title.  Do not be fooled, dear friends.  It is really just this simple.

The Logo Game
Another Buddy-original.  The boys have suddenly discovered that companies have logos, especially stores and cars.  Buddy really likes Toyotas since that is what we have.  He likes to scan the street looking for all the Toyotas and Hondas.  Button just likes to find cars.  He shouts "Car" or "Not Car" depending on what he is looking at at the time.

The "I'm Thankful For..." Game
Mommy came up with this game.  I usually like to play this game after I've gotten tired of the above games.  It also works well if there seems to be an attitude problem in the back seat.  Pretty much we just go around and say things that we are thankful for.

The "Pick a Person in the Car and Say Something You Like about Them" Game
Another game by mommy.  I'll usually start and pick one of the kids.  I say something I like about them, and then it is that person's turn to pick someone.  We go around until everyone has had a chance to bless someone else or until the game has run its course.

Learning Our Address
Not really a game, per se, but when I remember, I try to have the boys tell me what our address is as we pull onto our street.  It's a good time to teach them important facts like that.  I'll usually say, "Look, we're home.  What's the address of our home?"  Buddy knows it really well, but we'll need to do it more for Button.

"I Spy" Books
We always keep a couple of "I Spy" Books in the car for the boys to look at.  These are great because they are mostly "looking" books instead of "reading" books so they don't feel like mommy or daddy need to be reading it to them while they are in the car.  They can just enjoy the pictures.  They have also become another basis of a game for Buddy to play in the car.  In a lot of the pictures are letters.  He makes it a challenge to find all the letters in the alphabet.  He usually needs some prompting from mom about what letter comes next, but he'll then triumphantly find the letter and ask for the next one.

These are games that we like to play.  Any good games we are missing?

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
