February 2014

Did I mention I got a new smart phone for Christmas?  It's wonderful to have everything at my fingertips, but I still haven't figured out all the different ways to use it.  This includes using it as a camera.  Sure, I know how to take pictures, but I don't have a good way of getting them off.  I can email them individually, but it seems like a headache.  However, with knowing that I always have a camera with me, I'm not taking my big camera with me everywhere.  I'm discovering though that that means I'm just not getting any pictures of anything.

Here are ALL the pictures I took with the big camera this month:

This month has been more of what we started in January.  We've looked into and pursued options in a couple of different mission organizations, met with our pastor, got passports for the kids, and lots and lots of praying.  We're looking right now into going as tent-makers in Thailand, but we are still open to what God has planned for us.

The boys have been enjoying some of their extra-curriculars.  N is in Homezone at the YMCA again, and it is going really well.  With the weather being inconsistent, it gives him an outlet once a week to burn some energy.  The first hour they do organized games in the gym, and the second hour is in the pool.  Z is too young for Homezone, but we have him in swim lessons at the same time.  His teacher this session was fantastic and he's making great strides in his confidence in the water.

My big wonderful outing was the opportunity to go the MomHeart Conference in Irvine, CA.  This conference is hosted by the Clarkson family, and I've spent a lot of the past year reading most of their books on parenting.  It was fantastic to actually hear Sally Clarkson speak.  I loved her as an author and was pleased to find that she is even a better speaker!  I also got to hang out with my cousin and another good college friend surrounding the conference.  I stayed with my brothers in their condo, and my parents were able to be around a lot that weekend too.  It was so refreshing to have a break AND to be renewed in my purpose as a mom.

I laughed so much with my family down there.  They are so wonderful.  I'll leave you with a photo I scavenged from my phone.  I have some more pretty bad ones of all five of us, but I'll keep those to myself.  =)

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
