April 2014

I took pictures this month!!!  I think I've finally figured out the phone thing, and we had enough real events to take my bigger camera around.

The month began by me taking a date with this guy! (No, not the elephant - the cute one on the right!)

We had a lovely time at the zoo.  We rode the carousal, fed the birds, and walked around a fair bit soaking up the experience.  We've had a few rough months, so it was a good time to connect with my baby.  N had a date with his daddy that same morning.

A few days later, the local high school sponsored a free Astronomy night.  We had such an amazing time.  Of course, I loved all the Doctor Who themed stuff, but the boys also got to go into a bubble planetarium, make a star chart, play games, look through a telescope, get their faces painted and eat candy.  What's not to love?

N has been in our church's choir this past year.  They led worship for us on Palm Sunday, and it was wonderful.  I love just how much our church values our children.

Easter!  We invited some good friends over to dye Easter eggs with us just before Easter Sunday.  We're still working on finishing eating them.  Apparently I'm the only one that likes hard-boiled eggs!  They were/are beautiful nonetheless.

We did a couple of egg hunts - one at Kruckeberg Botanical Gardens and then our church hosted one as well.

The boys enjoyed their baskets and homemade cinnamon rolls.

Our zoo membership expires in May, so we've made an attempt to get there a little bit more.  We went over Shoreline's Spring Break with a number of church friends.

We also went to Magnuson Park for the first time in quite a while.  We were amazed at all the birds we saw.  There were even adorable ducklings.  Phil got some great shots of a few of our finds.

The boys and I also went to one of my favorite parks, Ravenna/Cowen Park.  We walked between the two parks, and discovered a lot of the herbs that we've learned about from playing Wildcraft.  N was identifying ones that I've been wondering about a lot.  It's been amazing how much nature study happens when the weather is nicer!

N also has really been wanting to buy the game, Laser Maze.  We finally went out to a toy store and he bought it with some of the money he's gotten from selling other toys.  Of course, it wasn't long before they decided to combine the pieces with their Robot Turtles game to shoot the ice walls with "real" lasers.  It's been a real hit.

I'm thankful for the turn in the weather.  It's nice to see sun again, and it makes me look forward to the summer!

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
