Letter Aa in Review

Our first week back was a success!  I've loved having all the activities to do with Little Buddy, and they really haven't taken very long to do.  Our first day, we were done with everything by 8AM!  Other days we spread the activities out throughout the day, but we usually got through everything.

Something extra we added to our curriculum this week were apple songs by 1+1+1=1.  She has a whole apple section on her fall fun page that I didn't discover until Monday.

Our first day back was super easy.  Phil read to the boys at breakfast from My ABC Bible Verses, and then I picked up where he left off.  The Do-A-Dot Aa worked out very well.  I thought he'd need help with the paint, but he picked up on what he needed to do right away.  These paints worked especially well for Button to paint at the same time without causing a big mess.

We also enjoyed eating our apples.  I made some taffy apple dip to go with them which was a big hit.

On Tuesday, we started our art study with Van Gogh (I had lost our prints until then).  We talked about the Sunflowers picture and what colors were used.  We also read our Van Gogh books.

We read our apple books, and played our Life on the Farm game.  Little Buddy loves his game, and wants to play it every time Button is asleep.

On Wednesday, the boys played with playdough for a long time in the morning.  We did the playdough mat, which Little Buddy only sort of understood what to do, but he enjoyed playing with it anyway.

We also made this wonderful upside down apple crisp from Laundry and Lullabies.  It was fun to let Little Buddy use our apple corer.

We did most of our worksheets during lunch time which meant that Daddy was able to help out.

Sequencing was a difficult concept

but we got there eventually!

The apple numbers was hard for him which was a surprise to me.  We gave this activity up as lost instead of trying to make it work.  Maybe it was hard because I didn't have him do it in numerical order?

Talking about which words are "soft" and which ones stir up "wrath"

On Thursday, we did another do-a-dot page and our beginning reading worksheet.  He enjoyed both of them.

We also found a great craft to do: a pom pom apple tree!  So easy, and perfect for my three year old!  Little Buddy enjoyed painting and gluing and even doing a little drawing.

Finally, on Friday, we caught up on a couple of activities that we had missed.  We made our applesauce muffins and worked a little on phonics.  Daddy had a half day, so he worked a bit with him on sounding words out.

We did our playdough mat again, and he still didn't quite grasp that you trace the Aa with the playdough.  It was fun anyway.  He enjoyed working with the foam letters, but I had to do it mostly for him.  He has a hard time staying focused on just Aa.  He can't wait to move on to Bb next week, and Cc... and Dd....

I was very surprised at how well he did at his pre-writing page.  It's kind of hard to see in the pictures below, but the first page we did together with me holding his hand.  The second page he did by himself and his writing was all over the place, but the third page actually looks pretty good since he's never really tried to copy something before.  I was impressed!

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
