Week One of Letter Bb in Review

Well, this week started out well.  We had a great Monday, but then I decided to sprain my foot at MOPs on Tuesday morning which totally threw off the rest of the week.  At least letter Bb didn't stand for Broken Bones.  Consequently, we didn't keep to the plan after that first day.  Instead we did a lot of the following...

The indoor playground is always a hit.

By Wednesday, I was at least able to walk, but looked like this.

Button likes the indoor playground too, but refused to let me take off his coat.

Lots of train tracks were made.  I heard a lot of  "Mommy, come play with me." And he heard a lot of "Honey, it hurts mommy to get down on the ground with my hurt foot."  He took it pretty well though.

I learned to give him activities to do at the table.  It would have been best if I could have stayed motivated to do what I actually had planned this week, but being hurt really made this hard.  We played a lot of playdough, and we got out our Lauri Toys Primer Pack that he hasn't seen in a few months.  Rotating toys is the best!

I don't think Little Buddy gets the concept of the playdough mat.  At least he has fun!

Button liked it too, and he didn't eat it this time!!!

Locktagons

He actually figured out how to do lacing for the first time.

So, in this sort of backwards post, here is what we actually did accomplish that was part of the original plan...

We read our ABC Bible Verse book a few times, and talked about being peacemakers.  This was great.  We used our Bible verse in our daily interactions with brother especially.  I've never liked the idea of quoting Scripture at your children all the time, mostly because I was afraid that I'd only do it when they were doing something bad.  But, having a verse of the week makes it so that we talk about what it means in everything we do - good and bad.  Not to mention, we only focus on one Scripture at a time.  Little Buddy really wanted to be a peacemaker.  We also enjoyed doing our craft to go along with it.

Monday morning was a lot of fun.  Not only did we get to do a craft, but we read one of Button's current favorite books, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?  We, of course, got to use our Do-A-Dot paints for Bb and our Brown Bear.

Then, Little Buddy had a great idea about making a bear cave in the living room.  The boys had tons of fun playing in it although Little Buddy kept saying that he was a doggy, and that mommy was the bear.  (Guess what we'll be focusing on for Dd!)  We even read some of our bear books under the blanket.

Our M&M sort, we did on another day, but Little Buddy was excited about the candy.  He hasn't had any since our Advent calendar ended so it was a real treat to have some after the activity was over.

We also did our art study with Van Gogh's Starry Night.  We got Mike Venezia's Van Gogh in both book and DVD form from the library which we've been really enjoying.

So, that was our week in a nutshell.  I should have my walking boot off on Tuesday next week which should make for a more motivated mommy.  Since there were so many fun Bb things to do and I kept finding more, we are going to do Letter Bb again next week.  We even picked up some new bear books on Friday that we get to talk about!

Little Disciples

As I've been learning more about Charlotte Mason and her methods, I've been thinking especially about what she means by "Education is a Discipline."  As I was reading her thoughts on discipline from her Homeschooling series, I was particularly struck by the following quotation. Discipline is not Punishment ––What is discipline? Look at the word; there is no hint of punishment in it. A disciple is a follower, and discipline is the state of the follower; the learner, imitator. Mothers and fathers do not well to forget that their children are, by the very order of Nature, their disciples... How Disciples are Lured ––He who would draw disciples does not trust to force; but to these three things–– to the attraction of his doctrine, to the persuasion of his presentation, to the enthusiasm of his disciples ; so the parent has teachings of the perfect life which he knows how to present continually with winning force until the children are quickened with such zeal for virtue...

Styrofoam Tray Shrink Art

Making styrofoam shrink art was one of those fun childhood memories I have from being a kid.  My mom would clean off the meat or veggie trays from the grocery store, give it to us kids to draw on, then we would watch in awe as our creations shrunk before our very eyes in the oven. I really wanted to do the same thing with my kids so I (silly-me) tried to find a tutorial of the sort on the Internet.  I did this mostly because I didn't know the temperature the oven needed to be or how long it should be in there.  Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't find one!  The closest thing I found was this website , but there were no pictures or anything.  I decided to wing it - it couldn't be that hard, right? And, yes, this craft is super easy.  First, I gave the boys a clean tray and a bunch of markers for them to draw with. I had to convince them to color a lot  since they were only making small markings. We put their creations on an aluminum-covered bak...

A Brand New House

Another major thing we did while my parents were here last week was a major room change in our house.  It feels like a brand new home!  We have a play room, the boys are now sharing a room, and Phil and I have moved into Button's old room (which was really the library/office/nursery/catch-all room).  I am so excited!!!   I finally feel settled into this home since there is finally a place (or at least a room) for everything.  The boys seem to really love sharing a room, and they are actually going to sleep better than they were when they were separate.  It's fantastic. By far, I'm most excited about our play room.  This room comes right off the kitchen, and it used to be our master bedroom.  Now, we have our books and toys in it which keeps our living room so. much. cleaner.  This room will eventually become our homeschool room with some minor improvements in a couple of years.  In the meantime, we are enjoying the extra space to play ...
