Advent Weeks 1 & 2

Advent is in full-swing, and we are loving it.  Button asks multiple times a day to do the Advent Calendar (sorry, dude), and Buddy is still trying to figure out when we do the Advent Wreath.  Unfortunately, mama ran out of ink in her printer just prior to Advent so some of the things that required printing just had to be gone without.  But that doesn't mean we haven't had fun!  Here is a glimpse into some of the things that we've been doing so far.

Our Advent Wreath
We have been doing our Advent Wreath every Sunday.  The boys love the candles and the special time together even though they don't understand most of it.

Edmonds Tree Lighting
We thought it would be fun to go to the Edmonds Tree Lighting this year.  It started at 4:30 so we thought that would work great with the boys' eating/sleep schedule.  It was fun, but Button was extremely bored and not very happy through most of it.  We didn't realize that the event was an hour long, but we did make it to the end.

Making Peppermint Bark
We like to make peppermint bark every year, and this year, I let the boys help out.  It was a really easy recipe, and it turned out great.  The boys loved that I let them "lick the bowl" once we were done.

Making Homeless Car Kits
I got the idea from the Seattle Union Gospel Mission's Action site.  We assembled 10 kits to pass out to homeless that we see when we are in the car.  Our kits included: water, kleenex, socks, granola bars, a candy cane, a Bible, Hotties hand warmers, and a sheet telling them about the resources available at the Gospel Mission.  It was a great sorting activity!

Swanson's Nursery
One morning we didn't have anything planned, so spontaneously the boys and I went to Swanson's Nursery for their reindeer festival.  There were reindeer, a camel, a model train exhibit, and a koi pond.  Ok, so a koi pond isn't very Christmasy, but I think it was one of their favorite parts!  Go figure!

Hanging Around the House
There's been a lot of just playing at home as well.  We've dressed ourselves up in Amazon packaging, read books by the Christmas tree, and enjoyed putting together our Nativity puzzle that Buddy always wants me to take a picture of each time they complete it.

R.I.P. Paper Snowflake
For a craft one day, we decided to make a 3D paper snowflake.  (Another one of those lovely craft ideas from Pinterest.)  It was pretty easy to do, and Buddy helped a fair bit with the cutting and taping.  I think it came out really nicely.

However, apparently candles and paper snowflakes don't mix very well.  Today, when we were starting to do our weekly Advent reading, it accidentally caught on fire from the Advent wreath candles.  It freaked all of us out, but no one was hurt.  Here is a picture of our snowflake remains:

Overall, though, it was a lot of fun to make and display.  Just maybe pick a place that isn't near fire.  =)

Little Disciples

As I've been learning more about Charlotte Mason and her methods, I've been thinking especially about what she means by "Education is a Discipline."  As I was reading her thoughts on discipline from her Homeschooling series, I was particularly struck by the following quotation. Discipline is not Punishment ––What is discipline? Look at the word; there is no hint of punishment in it. A disciple is a follower, and discipline is the state of the follower; the learner, imitator. Mothers and fathers do not well to forget that their children are, by the very order of Nature, their disciples... How Disciples are Lured ––He who would draw disciples does not trust to force; but to these three things–– to the attraction of his doctrine, to the persuasion of his presentation, to the enthusiasm of his disciples ; so the parent has teachings of the perfect life which he knows how to present continually with winning force until the children are quickened with such zeal for virtue...

Styrofoam Tray Shrink Art

Making styrofoam shrink art was one of those fun childhood memories I have from being a kid.  My mom would clean off the meat or veggie trays from the grocery store, give it to us kids to draw on, then we would watch in awe as our creations shrunk before our very eyes in the oven. I really wanted to do the same thing with my kids so I (silly-me) tried to find a tutorial of the sort on the Internet.  I did this mostly because I didn't know the temperature the oven needed to be or how long it should be in there.  Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't find one!  The closest thing I found was this website , but there were no pictures or anything.  I decided to wing it - it couldn't be that hard, right? And, yes, this craft is super easy.  First, I gave the boys a clean tray and a bunch of markers for them to draw with. I had to convince them to color a lot  since they were only making small markings. We put their creations on an aluminum-covered bak...

A Brand New House

Another major thing we did while my parents were here last week was a major room change in our house.  It feels like a brand new home!  We have a play room, the boys are now sharing a room, and Phil and I have moved into Button's old room (which was really the library/office/nursery/catch-all room).  I am so excited!!!   I finally feel settled into this home since there is finally a place (or at least a room) for everything.  The boys seem to really love sharing a room, and they are actually going to sleep better than they were when they were separate.  It's fantastic. By far, I'm most excited about our play room.  This room comes right off the kitchen, and it used to be our master bedroom.  Now, we have our books and toys in it which keeps our living room so. much. cleaner.  This room will eventually become our homeschool room with some minor improvements in a couple of years.  In the meantime, we are enjoying the extra space to play ...
