May 2013

I'm getting behind again!  I think I actually started writing this blog post on June 1st, but then started posting more recent things and didn't get back to it.  Well, here it is again if not tardy.

The boys have really been getting into their own art lately.  They can be so content with paper, markers, tape and scissors.  Add to this their current fascination with superheroes, and you get a lot of this...

Grandma and Papa also came to visit this month.  We had the best weather in the country that weekend - even better than their beloved San Diego.  We decided to make the most of it and take the ferry over to Bainbridge Island.  It was gorgeous.  We had a lovely time, but it was super quick.  I'm looking forward to having them come back in August for Button's birthday.

We also attempted some backyard camping.  Button didn't realize that you're actually supposed to sleep in the tent, so around 9:30 he requested to "go to bed."  Buddy, on the other hand, loved it, and he even slept in!  Amazing!

We renewed our zoo membership!  I've really missed going to the zoo.  I'm sure that we will be taking a lot of field trips there next year.

The boys have really enjoyed being in Pioneer Club at church.  The last meeting was their annual pine car derby.  We had a lot of fun designing the cars and painting them, but we really had no clue what we were doing.  We came in pretty much dead last each time.  The boys didn't mind though.  They had great fun!

And there we are - in  6th place!

The weather wasn't that great after grandma and papa left, but that doesn't keep us Seattle-ites inside.  We headed over to Volunteer Park in Capital Hill one rainy morning.

We found some shelter under the trees.

Another day we went on a long walk in Carkeek, and we even discovered an orchard there.  I just love this park; there is always something new to explore.

Story Markers - You can find the story to go along with each of these markers.  We'll have to do that next time!

We also went the the Northwest Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center.  There were definitely some interesting people there.  We especially enjoyed the street performers, and all their crazy stunts.  The drum tent was also a lot of fun.

Phew... Now I'm caught up... until June is over in a day.  =)

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
