November 2013 and House Update

After months of constant goings-on, November was a breath of fresh air.  Although Phil had a conference to go to, for the most part everything was quiet in our household.  We were able to focus on what normal life looks like before we headed into the holidays in December.

This month, the boys have played a lot of games with their daddy.  Phil actually created a table-top game that they have enjoyed playing together.

We went again to do our first Thursday of the month field trip to take advantage of the free museum days.  We were planning on going to the Nordic Heritage Museum since it was in Ballard near the locks.  We have been completing our study on Salmon so this made the most sense.

Of course, we had to end the day with salmon and chips at Ivars!

We also had a lot of fun decorating for Thanksgiving.  Below is our "Thankfulness Tree".  Everyday we added another leaf with something we were thankful for.

We spent Thanksgiving Day with family near Puyallup.  For Black Friday, we skipped the crowds and shopping and headed to the zoo.  It was pretty quiet, and it was fun to go with Daddy.  We even finally got to see the new baby giraffe!

We also decorated for Christmas that weekend.  Like our little tree?

Another thing that happened this month is we have found out that we will NOT be losing our home to make room for the new light rail.  The station will be 10 blocks away.  It really makes the most sense for it to be there, but it has shaken us up quite a lot.  We had been pretty sure for a couple of months now that our home was going to remain, but that hasn't meant that we have thought about what our lives may look like if we would indeed be moving.  Our thoughts have once again turned to possibilities of living overseas or moving to a bigger home here where we can offer a more hospitable place for guests and more room for our growing boys.

We don't know what God is doing in our lives, but we have been well-reminded that our earthly home is not our permanent home.  Now as we pray about where He wants us next (in this house, in this city, or someplace far away), I constantly try to remember what Jim Elliot has said,
ā€œWherever you are, be all there!
Live to the hilt every situation you believe to be the will of God.ā€

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
