Serving/Helping Week - 9/27/10

Continuing on our kindness theme, we are going to be talking about serving and helping others this week.

This is our last week of the month so we are going to be concluding our time with this month's music and memory verse.  It's going to be sad to say "good-bye", but it is nice that I have the flexibility in our "homeschool regime" to revisit and/or review these at any time.  I know that Carnival of the Animals is going to always stay a favorite, and I need to buy the book that Noah just can't seem to get enough of.

I think we've done pretty well with our memory verse of Philippians 4:13.  Noah definitely recognizes it, and if prompted, he can say it.  Although at two and a half, I'm not certain he understands yet what the verse is saying.  He's not yet into the "Why" stage, so he doesn't ask things like "Who's Christ?" or "What does 'strengthen' mean?".  I hope though that it will help him in the future.

Something I haven't yet mentioned that we are working on is potty-training.  Noah was supposed to be potty-trained before starting traditional preschool, but there is a little flexibility with the structure.  We use our potty-time to review our letters and numbers.  While sitting on the potty, we count to twenty or sing the alphabet song.  Although he really resisted sitting there when we started potty-training, he's doing it more and more willingly.  I just can't wait for the day that he tells us he needs to go.

So, again with our weekly line-up...

Monday we get to visit with all our friends we made at MOPs last year at Green Lake (weather permitting!).  I'm hoping to do a little nature study with Noah and collect some leaves and rocks.  We always enjoy looking out across the lake, splashing in puddles, and seeing the ducks.  We may make a quick stop over at the library that afternoon to pick up some of our books.

On Tuesday, we get to practice serving others by bringing one of our neighbors a meal.  I'm hoping that Noah will be able to help me both make the meal and enjoy taking it over to them.  I think this may be a stretch for us (things like this are so much easier when I do them alone), but I think it will be good for him to have this accomplishment.  (Even if it means taking a lot more time to do it, and cleaning up a bigger mess!)

Wednesday is craft day.  We are going to make Cheerio necklaces out of yarn with, you guessed it, Cheerios!  Yummy and fun!  We have three different types of Cheerios (regular, honey nut, and multi-grain) so we might do some sorting first before we string them together.

Thursday is preschool.  We will once again make sure that we have lunch available in the car to avoid a meltdown.  =)

Friday is the first day of October!  We are going to celebrate by making yummy apple pumpkin muffins.  I love the Fall!  Noah is getting more and more excited about baking with me.  He loves getting out his step stool from the bathroom and bringing it in the kitchen.  He's getting more careful about dumping out ingredients from the measuring cups into the mixing bowl.  It's fun to see him so excited about helping me out in the kitchen.

Well, that concludes our adventure for this week.  I'll let you know how it went on Saturday!

Styrofoam Tray Shrink Art

Making styrofoam shrink art was one of those fun childhood memories I have from being a kid.  My mom would clean off the meat or veggie trays from the grocery store, give it to us kids to draw on, then we would watch in awe as our creations shrunk before our very eyes in the oven. I really wanted to do the same thing with my kids so I (silly-me) tried to find a tutorial of the sort on the Internet.  I did this mostly because I didn't know the temperature the oven needed to be or how long it should be in there.  Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't find one!  The closest thing I found was this website , but there were no pictures or anything.  I decided to wing it - it couldn't be that hard, right? And, yes, this craft is super easy.  First, I gave the boys a clean tray and a bunch of markers for them to draw with. I had to convince them to color a lot  since they were only making small markings. We put their creations on an aluminum-covered baking sheet, and put

Little Disciples

As I've been learning more about Charlotte Mason and her methods, I've been thinking especially about what she means by "Education is a Discipline."  As I was reading her thoughts on discipline from her Homeschooling series, I was particularly struck by the following quotation. Discipline is not Punishment ––What is discipline? Look at the word; there is no hint of punishment in it. A disciple is a follower, and discipline is the state of the follower; the learner, imitator. Mothers and fathers do not well to forget that their children are, by the very order of Nature, their disciples... How Disciples are Lured ––He who would draw disciples does not trust to force; but to these three things–– to the attraction of his doctrine, to the persuasion of his presentation, to the enthusiasm of his disciples ; so the parent has teachings of the perfect life which he knows how to present continually with winning force until the children are quickened with such zeal for virtue

A Brand New House

Another major thing we did while my parents were here last week was a major room change in our house.  It feels like a brand new home!  We have a play room, the boys are now sharing a room, and Phil and I have moved into Button's old room (which was really the library/office/nursery/catch-all room).  I am so excited!!!   I finally feel settled into this home since there is finally a place (or at least a room) for everything.  The boys seem to really love sharing a room, and they are actually going to sleep better than they were when they were separate.  It's fantastic. By far, I'm most excited about our play room.  This room comes right off the kitchen, and it used to be our master bedroom.  Now, we have our books and toys in it which keeps our living room so. much. cleaner.  This room will eventually become our homeschool room with some minor improvements in a couple of years.  In the meantime, we are enjoying the extra space to play and just hang out.  There's still
