Sharing Week - 9/20/10

This week is sharing week. We are going to be reading a number of books that encourage children to share. I found that there were a lot of books about sharing that focused on fixing a negative attitude. Although we got a few books along that line, I tried to instead get more books that showed kids wanting to share out of a cheerful heart. I think a positive book would accomplish better what I'm trying to convey to my preschooler.

For our music, we will continue listening to the Carnival of Animals. My son enjoyed it so much this last week. Playing it during lunch seemed to work really well when I propped up his book to look at while he ate and listened to the music.

We are going to wait do our art appreciation until October. I do want to start doing crafts though a couple times a week. One day we will do baking and another day we will do art. I found a great book with the obvious title, Preschool Art: It's the Process, Not the Product. I like that we aren't going to be focusing on the product since we just want to have fun with it.

We will keep working our this month's Bible Verse of Philippians 4:13. My preschooler pretty much already has it memorized, but we are going to review it through the end of the month.

We are still working on the ABCs and our numbers hopefully everyday.

So, here is our weekly line-up...

On Monday, we will visit the library again to pick up our sharing books. I realized last week that I couldn't really make the library an "event" or field trip since we can't really stay long. This is one of the difficulties I've found with having a very mobile (and climbing!) toddler while keeping my preschooler occupied. Also, the computers in the kids section of the library are very distracting. My preschooler and one-year old are both drawn to them instead of the books. Instead of wanting to read all the wonderful picture books they are surrounded by, they are attracted by the entertainment of technology. The computer games are good and educational, but they lack the natural imagination of a child. All this to say, on Monday we will go to the library quickly and read our books at home.

Tuesday will be one of our craft days. I thought it would be fun to make some friendship bread to celebrate our sharing time. Anyone local want some?

On Wednesday, we will take a field trip to the indoor playground. What better place to practice sharing than to go to a place with lots of toys and lots of friends!

Thursday is traditional preschool again. This week, I'm going to make sure that we have food in car so we don't have a meltdown when we get home. I'm also hoping to get to talk to his teacher more so that we can complement what they are doing in class at home.

Friday will be another craft day. I bought some poster chalk last week, so we are going to do some chalk drawing. I hope that the different medium will make it so my preschooler actually wants to draw. He hasn't shown much interest in it before.

I also want to go outside a fair bit this week. The forecast is a bit unpredictable this week, but maybe we can at least make it out for our rain-walk sometime this week since we missed it last Friday.

Well, there is our week in advance. The adventure continues!

Little Disciples

As I've been learning more about Charlotte Mason and her methods, I've been thinking especially about what she means by "Education is a Discipline."  As I was reading her thoughts on discipline from her Homeschooling series, I was particularly struck by the following quotation. Discipline is not Punishment ––What is discipline? Look at the word; there is no hint of punishment in it. A disciple is a follower, and discipline is the state of the follower; the learner, imitator. Mothers and fathers do not well to forget that their children are, by the very order of Nature, their disciples... How Disciples are Lured ––He who would draw disciples does not trust to force; but to these three things–– to the attraction of his doctrine, to the persuasion of his presentation, to the enthusiasm of his disciples ; so the parent has teachings of the perfect life which he knows how to present continually with winning force until the children are quickened with such zeal for virtue...

Styrofoam Tray Shrink Art

Making styrofoam shrink art was one of those fun childhood memories I have from being a kid.  My mom would clean off the meat or veggie trays from the grocery store, give it to us kids to draw on, then we would watch in awe as our creations shrunk before our very eyes in the oven. I really wanted to do the same thing with my kids so I (silly-me) tried to find a tutorial of the sort on the Internet.  I did this mostly because I didn't know the temperature the oven needed to be or how long it should be in there.  Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't find one!  The closest thing I found was this website , but there were no pictures or anything.  I decided to wing it - it couldn't be that hard, right? And, yes, this craft is super easy.  First, I gave the boys a clean tray and a bunch of markers for them to draw with. I had to convince them to color a lot  since they were only making small markings. We put their creations on an aluminum-covered bak...

A Brand New House

Another major thing we did while my parents were here last week was a major room change in our house.  It feels like a brand new home!  We have a play room, the boys are now sharing a room, and Phil and I have moved into Button's old room (which was really the library/office/nursery/catch-all room).  I am so excited!!!   I finally feel settled into this home since there is finally a place (or at least a room) for everything.  The boys seem to really love sharing a room, and they are actually going to sleep better than they were when they were separate.  It's fantastic. By far, I'm most excited about our play room.  This room comes right off the kitchen, and it used to be our master bedroom.  Now, we have our books and toys in it which keeps our living room so. much. cleaner.  This room will eventually become our homeschool room with some minor improvements in a couple of years.  In the meantime, we are enjoying the extra space to play ...
