Fall Part 4 - 11/15/2010

This week we are going to move math up earlier in the week.  I like the sound of Math Monday, so Monday it is.  The alphabet theme has been easily worked into our week with the library kit so I don't think it will suffer from being moved back.

This will also be Noah's last week of traditional preschool.  We will be taking him out for both financial reasons, and so that we can have more time together.  I know he will miss going, but I'm hoping to supplement with doing other fun community classes from time to time.  Our city has some wonderful music, art, and gym/sport lessons for preschool aged children.

Everyday

  • Listen to The Four Seasons or Ring of Mystery by Vivaldi
    • Talk more about what we are hearing
  • Read about Norman Rockwell and look through our big coffee table book of his pictures
  • Devotions and Bible Verse Review

Monday
  • Seasonal Workbox - Read Fall Books
  • Rotating (Math) - Leaf Counting Book from Totally Tots
    • Instructions from Totally Tots - "Gather 15 leaves and 5 sheets of construction paper and number them 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.  Have your LO glue the correct number of leaves to each sheet.  Add a cover page, laminate, and tie together with yarn for a cute counting book."
    • I don't have a laminating machine (yet!) so I'm going to have to hide this craft away once it is done until I can make it a book.  I think it could be a really nice book for Zach if it actually makes it to completion.
  • Extra Activity - Lacing from our Lauri Toys Primer Pack
  • Baby Box - Seasonal Bin

Tuesday
  • Seasonal - Countdown to Thanksgiving paper chain
  • Rotating - MOPs Day
  • Extra Activity - Thanksgiving coloring page
  • Baby Box - Puzzles

Wednesday
  • Seasonal - Handprint Turkey Craft
    • This seems to be a pretty popular craft in the blogosphere.  I'll basically be painting Noah's hand for him to press onto a paper plate or piece of construction paper.  This will definitely be something we do when the baby is sleeping!
  • Rotating (Music) - Read Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin
    • I'm hoping to help Noah know what instruments look like instead of just what sound they make.
  • Extra Activity - Gift bag for Noah's preschool teacher.
    • Since Noah will be leaving preschool, we want to do something special for his teacher.
  • Baby Box - Band in the Box

Thursday
  • Seasonal - Watercolor paint
  • Rotating - Last Day of Preschool
  • Extra Activity - Read Fall Books
  • Baby Box - finger painting with ketchup and mustard
    • I was given this great idea from a dear friend.  This way, it won't matter if he eats any!

Friday

Saturday
  • Science - Daddy really enjoyed the experiment from last week.  This week, the boys will be doing "The Great Air Machine Race" from the book, From Mudpies to Magnets.

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
