Thanksgiving Week - 11/22/2010

It's going to be a cold week up here in the Pacific Northwest.  We may even get a bit of snow.  I definitely need to find more for us to keep busy with in the afternoons as I want to limit our screen time as much as possible, but going outside seems to be getting more and more difficult.  The high for Tuesday is only supposed to be 29 degrees.  That temperature is hard for this SoCal girl to wrap her mind around.  Yikes!  Noah is loving movement songs ("Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" anyone?) so we might be doing a bit more of that.

This week is also THANKSGIVING!  I love this holiday.  I'm hoping that we can do a lot of Thanksgiving activities and talk about Thankfulness.  We just got Madame Blueberry: A Lesson in Thankfulness from the library, and we have a number of Thanksgiving books to use.

Here are our activities for this week....

Everyday - these unfortunately haven't been happening as much recently.  I think I'm going to have to re-evaluate our music and art studies for the new year.  We are still listening to our music fairly regularly, but he's not nearly as interested in Vivaldi as he was with Mozart.  Our art study is sadly neglected, but that doesn't mean that we won't try.

  • Listen to The Four Seasons or Ring of Mystery by Vivaldi
    • Talk more about what we are hearing
  • Read about Norman Rockwell and look through our big coffee table book of his pictures
  • Devotions and Bible Verse Review

Monday
  • Seasonal Workbox - Thanksgiving Coloring Page
  • Rotating (Math) - Sticker Math
    • This is a very simple idea, but it lets Noah play with stickers!  I'm going to give him a sheet of paper with boxes numbering 1-10.  He then gets to put the corresponding number of stickers in each box.
  • Extra Activity - Locktagon Construction from our Lauri Toys Primer Pack
  • Baby Box - Shape Puzzle

Tuesday

Wednesday
  • Seasonal - Thanksgiving Tot Book
    • I've read a lot about lapbooks in many blogs.  I'm not yet convinced they are right for us, but I thought this one looked fun.  Some of the activities might be too advanced for Noah, but we'll see.
  • Rotating (Music) - Make and decorate a tambourine out of rice and two paper plates.
  • Extra Activity - Help mama make a corn casserole and a pie for Thanksgiving the next day.
  • Baby Box - Tambourine decorating

Thursday is Thanksgiving!  We will be visiting family about an hour south of us for the holiday.  We always love going down there and being with them.
  • Seasonal - Color Turkey placemat we got from the dollar bin at Target
  • Extra Activity - Help with last minute cooking
  • Baby Box - Turkey placemat

    How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

    About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
