Fire Safety Week - 10/11/10

I'm so excited about Fire Safety Week.  Of course, I had a little bit of poor planning as I just discovered that the national fire prevention week was last week!  Oops!  It is funny though that I had no idea about that when I made my own plans, and I was only a week off.  Noah is going to love this week.  We live right next to a fire station, so we get to see the firetrucks and ambulances go by all the time AND... it... never... gets... old.  =)  He loves learning about fire trucks, but we haven't really talked much about fire safety.  So this week, we get to fill in those gaps!

Also considering how hard last week was, I'm going to try to make some changes to how we spend our time at home.  It seems to me that we do need to continue to stay at home as much as possible and work on good habits.  However, trying to fit in one activity during each day isn't really working for Noah.  We need to have more structure, especially in the mornings.  So this week I'm going to try something new.  I'm going to schedule out our days in small increments, thus breaking up our day better and maybe even learning more.  We'll see.  Mornings are the hardest as it is our longest stretch without Daddy.  (I haven't yet mentioned it on this blog, but my boys adore their daddy and LOVE spending time with him as do I!)  The afternoon is already broken up a fair bit with nap/quiet time, playtime (usually outside), and dinner.

Monday is mostly going to be a stay at home day.  We do need to make a quick run to the library, but that should take only 20 minutes or so.  Here's our approximate schedule for Monday:
7:30-8:00 - Breakfast with Devotions and Memory Verse (we are going to be adding to our Bible verse from "Trust in the Lord" to "With all your heart").
8:00-9:00 - Playtime and Daddy time (and hopefully a shower for Mom).
9:00-9:15 - Talk about our newly revealed Monet picture, Water Lilies.  Read one of our Monet books.
9:15-9:45 - Play with playdough.
9:45-10:00 - Snack and sing alphabet song (we're struggling with remembering the "M" in "LMNOP").
10:00-10:30 - Library.
10:30-10:50 - Read fire safety books and put on fireman helmet from costume box.
10:50-11:30 - Playtime (indoors or out) - pretend to be firefighters.
11:30-12:00 - Lunch while reading more library books.
12:00-12:30 - Watch Monet movie while Mama puts Zach down for a nap.
12:30-1:00 - Play with Daddy while he's home for lunch.
1:00 - Quiet time (which sometime turns into naptime) while listening to Mozart's Magnificent Voyage.

Tuesday is MOPs.  We are trying to have a family breakfast out on Tuesday mornings at a coffee shop.  So, we will go there as soon as we can get the family dressed and out the door.  Then, we need to be at MOPs by 9:00AM for Mama to be ready in her classroom.  MOPs ends at 11:30.  We'll pick Daddy up from his coffee shop "office" and come home for lunch.  Nap and quiet time for the boys will be shortly afterward.

Our craft day is Wednesday.  It will look similar to Monday with a few variations.
7:30-8:00 - Breakfast with Devotions and Memory Verse
8:00-9:00 - Playtime and Daddy time
9:00-9:20 - Exercise for kids DVD.  I'm going to be getting a couple of these from the library, so we'll see which one we choose.
9:20-9:50 - Free play while Mama gets snack and craft ready.  Listen to Mozart's Magic Fantasy in background.
9:50-10:10 - Snack and read fire safety books.
10:10-10:30 - Make our Firetruck craft.
10:30-11:00 - Playtime.
11:00-11:30 - Color some coloring pages from Sparky the Firedog website while talking about "Stop, Drop, and Roll".  We might also do some Stop, Drop, and Rolling!
11:30-12:00 - Lunch and sing alphabet song.
12:00-12:30 - Watch Amazing Heroes: Spend a Day with Firefighters movie while Mama puts Zach down for a nap.
12:30-1:00 - Play with Daddy while he's home for lunch.
1:00 - Quiet time (which sometime turns into naptime) while listening to Mozart's Magnificent Voyage.

Thursday is a typical Thursday.  Breakfast, Devotions, Memory Verse, Daddy Time, Preschool, Lunch (beginning in car), Quiet Time.  We will probably also be making our yummy apple pumpkin muffins that afternoon as Mama is going to a Girl's Night Out that evening and gets to bring a pumpkin dish.

The highlight of our week is Friday.  This is our field trip day, and we get to go to a fire station!!!  We've invited some of our friends to join us at the Fire Safety Center, and we have the whole place to ourselves for about an hour.  The kids get to hear a safety presentation, climb on a firetruck, where firefighter clothes that fit them, and play with fire truck toys.  How much better can it get?  It's also geared for preschoolers!  I can't wait.  I'm not telling Noah about it until Thursday or possibly Friday morning though because I know it will be all he can talk about and he doesn't have a good sense of time yet.  Here is Friday's schedule...

7:30-8:00 - Breakfast with Devotions and Memory Verse
8:00-9:00 - Playtime and Daddy time
9:00-9:20 - Exercise for kids DVD.
9:20-9:45 - Free play while listening to Mozart's Magic Fantasy.
9:45-11:30 - FIRE SAFETY CENTER TRIP
11:30-12:00 - Lunch and sing alphabet song.
12:00-12:30 - Watch Amazing Heroes: Spend a Day with Firefighters movie while Mama puts Zach down for a nap.
12:30-1:00 - Play with Daddy while he's home for lunch.
1:00 - Quiet time (which sometime turns into naptime) while listening to Mozart's Magnificent Voyage.

Whew... this is going to be a big week, but it is going to be so... much... fun!!!

  1. I just found this blog and I already love it! My favorite part is the schedules you've developed. Seeing how you've laid it out is very practical and it seems do-able. It's really helpful for me to imagine what types of educational things I can do with Penelope, since her preschool days will be here in no time! - Blythe

Little Disciples

As I've been learning more about Charlotte Mason and her methods, I've been thinking especially about what she means by "Education is a Discipline."  As I was reading her thoughts on discipline from her Homeschooling series, I was particularly struck by the following quotation. Discipline is not Punishment ––What is discipline? Look at the word; there is no hint of punishment in it. A disciple is a follower, and discipline is the state of the follower; the learner, imitator. Mothers and fathers do not well to forget that their children are, by the very order of Nature, their disciples... How Disciples are Lured ––He who would draw disciples does not trust to force; but to these three things–– to the attraction of his doctrine, to the persuasion of his presentation, to the enthusiasm of his disciples ; so the parent has teachings of the perfect life which he knows how to present continually with winning force until the children are quickened with such zeal for virtue...

Styrofoam Tray Shrink Art

Making styrofoam shrink art was one of those fun childhood memories I have from being a kid.  My mom would clean off the meat or veggie trays from the grocery store, give it to us kids to draw on, then we would watch in awe as our creations shrunk before our very eyes in the oven. I really wanted to do the same thing with my kids so I (silly-me) tried to find a tutorial of the sort on the Internet.  I did this mostly because I didn't know the temperature the oven needed to be or how long it should be in there.  Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't find one!  The closest thing I found was this website , but there were no pictures or anything.  I decided to wing it - it couldn't be that hard, right? And, yes, this craft is super easy.  First, I gave the boys a clean tray and a bunch of markers for them to draw with. I had to convince them to color a lot  since they were only making small markings. We put their creations on an aluminum-covered bak...

A Brand New House

Another major thing we did while my parents were here last week was a major room change in our house.  It feels like a brand new home!  We have a play room, the boys are now sharing a room, and Phil and I have moved into Button's old room (which was really the library/office/nursery/catch-all room).  I am so excited!!!   I finally feel settled into this home since there is finally a place (or at least a room) for everything.  The boys seem to really love sharing a room, and they are actually going to sleep better than they were when they were separate.  It's fantastic. By far, I'm most excited about our play room.  This room comes right off the kitchen, and it used to be our master bedroom.  Now, we have our books and toys in it which keeps our living room so. much. cleaner.  This room will eventually become our homeschool room with some minor improvements in a couple of years.  In the meantime, we are enjoying the extra space to play ...
