Week Six of Homeschooling Completed

Ok, so this week is a blurr.  My husband left for North Carolina on Thursday, and I'm struggling to keep up with things here on my own.  Here is what I remember from this last week...

Monday was good.  I think that we usually start out well.  Noah really liked the exercise DVDs we tried, and I think that we will continue those on rainy days.  The paper bag craft wasn't a big hit.  I made mine to show him how it works, but I'm pretty sure my son is a perfectionist.  He doesn't want to do something that he knows he won't do really well at.  Also, Zach kept wanting to eat the wiggly eyes so that was a bust.  Finding age-appropriate crafts for kids under 3 is HARD.   Noah's still excited about Monet.  We didn't put up a new picture this week, but looked through a Monet art book instead.  He really likes the train pictures.

Tuesday was a nice MOPs day.

Wednesday was rough, but we did manage to collect a bunch of leaves and make our leaf rubbings.  Noah was pretty excited about that.

Thursday was preschool.  We also made some yummy pumpkin spice cookies from TWO ingredients.  We also got to use a mixer for the first time since Daddy got one for Mommy for her birthday.  I thought he might be afraid of the sound, but he did great.

Friday went very differently than planned.  Since Daddy was gone, the kids were a bit more restless than normal.  We decided to get some wiggles out at the indoor playground.  After getting some lunch and putting baby down for a nap, Noah and I did our pumpkin letter fishing.  This went GREAT.  First, I put all the pumpkins upside down on the ground.  He picked them up one by one with his fishing pole, and we talked about what each letter was and what its sound is.  Then, we arranged them all in alphabetical order.  Finally, we picked them all up by mama calling out different letters for him to find and "fish" for.  I could tell he had learned a few of the letters by the time we got to that last activity.  I love it when I can see him learning.

Successes This Week

  • Fishing for letters.  I want to find some more activities that have us handling letters and numbers more often.

What Could Have Gone Better

  • Still figuring out that craft thing.

What I've Learned

  • Scheduling out every minute of the morning doesn't work.  We don't stay on track, and that is usually good.  It means that we spend more time in places that we need more time and less on things that don't keep our attention.  Instead, I'm going to try planning 2 or 3 activities per day that we can do.  Then, we can do them whenever it works best for us.

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
