Homeschooling Week in Review

Monday was nice.  Noah really enjoys the books on the fall.  Our favorites are:
  • Leaf Trouble by Jonathan Emmett- cute story about a squirrel who is worried about the leaves falling off the tree and tries to put them back until his mommy squirrel explains to him why they are falling.
  • Applesauce Season by Eden Ross Lipson - tale of a city boy whose family makes applesauce throughout the fall.  Includes a recipe at the end.
  • Who Loves the Fall? by Bob Raczka- simple book with rhyming names of all those who love autumn.
  • Mouse's First Fall by Lauren Thompson - Mouse and Minka play in the leaves.
  • That's When I'm Happy by Beth Shoshan - a little bear enjoys the little things in life with his mommy and daddy bear
We did the Alphabet Exercise cards, and they were a hit as well.  Noah couldn't do half the activities, but he enjoyed trying and watching me do them.  Zach liked watching us make fools of ourselves as well.  It was a good review on the alphabet, but I wish we had done a little more with the cards like we did with the pumpkin letters last week.

We also got to have a lot of fun playing outside in all the leaves that fell in our neighbor's yard.  I got a spontaneous photo shoot of the boys.

Tuesday was a nice day at MOPs.  We got home around noon, and Noah and I made our crockpot applesauce.  I decided to change which recipe I used.  I used the recipe from A Year of Slow Cooking instead.  I figured that having sugar in it would be just fine.  =)  The boys probably liked it better that way anyway.  We used my new apple corer/slicer (thanks Mom and Dad!), which made everything a breeze.  We took the applesauce over to a friends, and it was all eaten that evening.  So yummy.  (I actually made more the next day.  I decided to double the recipe so it would last longer, but we only had a little bit left by the end of Wednesday even so.)

Noah also enjoyed just putting stickers on a page.  This kept him entertained for quite some time.  I found it interesting that he picked out all the blue and green stickers mostly.  I think next time I pull out stickers I'll try to make it a game where he matches similar shapes or colors.

The pumpkin patch on Wednesday was a lot of fun.  We listened to Mozart's Magical Voyage on the trip up which kept the boys super quiet.  Noah absolutely loves to listen to the story.  When we got there, we met up with his preschool class.  He did a hay bale maze, pet farm animals, and went on a hayride to the pumpkin patch.  One of my favorite things was when he pointed to the open field and said, "Hey Mommy, it's like Monet!"  I must be doing something right!  =)  He couldn't wait to pick out a green pumpkin.  We all got really muddy, but we had a good time overall.

When we got home, he started watching a movie, but then asked to listen to Mozart's Magic Fantasy instead.  It's amazing to me how he will just sit on the couch and listen for a half hour.  He even talks about what is going on in the story.  I love it.

Thursday, Noah got to dress up for his preschool.  He loves being a cowboy.  And really, that is all we accomplished that day.

On Friday, we had a friend over, and we did our fall leaf tree craft together.  Sorry, I didn't get any pictures!  I should have made the craft first to show Noah how it is supposed to look since he pretty much just pasted the leaves in a pile in the middle of his paper hand/tree.  It  was fun though.  He also did the pumpkin sorting which was super easy for him.  I'm glad we did it though.  It's helpful for me to see what he can do and what he can't.  Sometimes I'm surprised at what he's capable of while other times I expect him to do something that he just isn't ready for.  Daddy came home that evening from a business trip, so we got to go on a field trip to the airport!  We love airplanes!

We had fun doing Science Saturday with Daddy making paper airplanes.  Daddy made them do different things, and Noah even decorated his airplane.

Successes This Week:

  • Noah's excitement over Monet and Mozart.  I'm going to miss those guys as we switch gears for the month of November.
  • Playing outside on sunny days with our wonderful neighbors!

What Could Have Gone Better:

  • I was burned out this week.  Being a "single" parent for a week is hard work.  I'm thankful for a caring husband who loves our kids.  Welcome back, Daddy!
  • Totally missed doing "music" on Wednesday.  I think I'm okay with that.

What I learned:
  • Who needs boxes?  I thought that having the boxes would be important, but I found that just having a list of things to do each day was enough.  It might be more important when we start our "Letter Box" in the spring, but we'll see.
  • For the most part, it looks like our "Extra Activity" is something for us to do in the afternoons.  This will probably become more important as the days get shorter and the weather gets more rainy.

How I'm Approaching... Geometry

N will be taking Geometry this year.  A Little Bit of Background His last year was split between taking his first semester of Algebra I at the local middle school as an 8th grader and his second semester being homeschooled. Khan Academy was a fantastic resource for him to make sure that he didn't have any gaps in his learning. We also used IXL to supplement. He took a math diagnostic right when we started homeschooling, and then took the personalized lessons to make sure he wasn't missing anything from even earlier math. N likes math, but it isn't an obsession for him like it is for his brother. I'm a huge fan of the Art of Problem Solving's courses especially since we loved their elementary series, Beast Academy, when they were younger. However, AoPS is extremely rigorous and expensive if you take their online courses, so they are better suited for students who want to focus a lot of their attention on math. However, they do have a FREE online learning platform for...

About Me

Hello! Welcome to my blog. What you will find here are my attempts at sorting through my ideas and implementation of homeschool curriculum and activities that I have pursued with my own two boys. The Beginning I began this blog in 2008 when my oldest was only a year old. It began as a family blog chronicling our adventures as a young family in Seattle. We decided early on that we wanted to homeschool our two sons. Honestly, now, I don't remember why we decided to do that, but we did it nevertheless. We began teaching our children as soon as they could walk and talk. We made many mistakes along the way and so learned to follow the lead of our children in what they were interested in. We focused on delight-directed learning with a lot of outings and fun things to do. When things got rough, we learned to adapt and switch things out. Moving To Thailand In 2015, our family moved to Thailand. We started another blog for our time there, but alas it was not a good fit for us. We had int...
