Week Five of Homeschooling Completed

This week was a rollercoaster, and we strayed pretty far from our schedule.  But, hey! We still got lots done, and for the most part had a really great time.

Monday went so much better than last week.  I really think that the schedule helped Noah.  He enjoyed all of our activities for the morning, and even learned his Bible verse!
I definitely want to keep going with scheduling out our mornings.  Moving from one activity to another seems really important, especially since Zach isn't yet able to keep himself entertained without help.

Tuesday was busy with MOPs.  The morning went as planned, but we also had a lot of fun hanging out in the backyard in the afternoon.  Noah has this great play table that works as a writing table, a duplo table, or an easel.  We hadn't used the easel part yet, so we decided to take it outside and get out the paints just like Monet did.  No staying in a stuffy old studio for us!  =)
Both of the boys got really messy from playing outside and from the paint so we turned the easel into a makeshift water table to get them cleaned off.  It was lots of fun.

Wednesday we had one sick preschooler.  I could tell as soon as he woke up that something was up - he was cranky and unresponsive to us.  I thought that maybe we would just have a movie day and cut out the schedule.  Since I wasn't sure what was going on then, we decided to go play at a coffee shop.  He had a good time, but when we got home, he wouldn't eat.  He took a long nap (his idea) even though he doesn't usually nap anymore.  It's nice to be flexible.  We watched a Pixar movie in the afternoon, and he was more than happy to go to sleep that night.

Because he was sick on Wednesday, we cancelled going to traditional preschool on Thursday.  I was hoping that it would mean that we would have more of a chance to do some of the things that we didn't get to do on Wednesday, but while kiddos were getting better, the nap/sleepy times where all askew.  We managed to get our firetruck craft completed.  Noah really enjoyed gluing the pieces together.  He was a bit hesitant to color it, but once he started he didn't want to stop.  He also enjoyed watching the firefighters movie.

Friday morning was odd as the boys both took a morning nap around 9AM.  I had to wake them both up in order to make it to the Fire Safety Center.  Boy, was it fun.  We met up with a bunch of friends there, and the kids got to climb all over the fire engine, wear kid-sized firefighter outfits, hear a great fire safety talk, and play with fire engine toys.  The boys LOVED it.  We will definitely go back in the future.

We reviewed what we learned from the books, movies, and lessons we had on fire safety on Friday as well.  He now knows that if he hears the fire alarm go off that he runs outside to the grass.  We also practiced "Stop, Drop, and Roll" which was super fun.

Saturday, (yes, Saturday), I found out that our city's fire department was having an open house at their headquarters/training center.  Once we found out, we had to go.  It was so beautiful outside.  We got to see the firefighters demonstrating how to rescue people from a tall building.  There were also plenty of fire trucks and ambulances around for us to climb in.

Successes This Week
  • Our Fire Safety Center trip.  We will definitely be going back in the future.
  • Impromptu painting session in the backyard.
What Could Have Gone Better
  • Not being sick.  It totally threw off our week even though he was really only sick for a day.
What I Learned
  • hmmm... nothing major this week.  I did like how the schedule went on Monday so we'll try to do more of that in the future.  We just weren't able to continue it because of the illness disruption.

Little Disciples

As I've been learning more about Charlotte Mason and her methods, I've been thinking especially about what she means by "Education is a Discipline."  As I was reading her thoughts on discipline from her Homeschooling series, I was particularly struck by the following quotation. Discipline is not Punishment ––What is discipline? Look at the word; there is no hint of punishment in it. A disciple is a follower, and discipline is the state of the follower; the learner, imitator. Mothers and fathers do not well to forget that their children are, by the very order of Nature, their disciples... How Disciples are Lured ––He who would draw disciples does not trust to force; but to these three things–– to the attraction of his doctrine, to the persuasion of his presentation, to the enthusiasm of his disciples ; so the parent has teachings of the perfect life which he knows how to present continually with winning force until the children are quickened with such zeal for virtue...

Styrofoam Tray Shrink Art

Making styrofoam shrink art was one of those fun childhood memories I have from being a kid.  My mom would clean off the meat or veggie trays from the grocery store, give it to us kids to draw on, then we would watch in awe as our creations shrunk before our very eyes in the oven. I really wanted to do the same thing with my kids so I (silly-me) tried to find a tutorial of the sort on the Internet.  I did this mostly because I didn't know the temperature the oven needed to be or how long it should be in there.  Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't find one!  The closest thing I found was this website , but there were no pictures or anything.  I decided to wing it - it couldn't be that hard, right? And, yes, this craft is super easy.  First, I gave the boys a clean tray and a bunch of markers for them to draw with. I had to convince them to color a lot  since they were only making small markings. We put their creations on an aluminum-covered bak...

A Brand New House

Another major thing we did while my parents were here last week was a major room change in our house.  It feels like a brand new home!  We have a play room, the boys are now sharing a room, and Phil and I have moved into Button's old room (which was really the library/office/nursery/catch-all room).  I am so excited!!!   I finally feel settled into this home since there is finally a place (or at least a room) for everything.  The boys seem to really love sharing a room, and they are actually going to sleep better than they were when they were separate.  It's fantastic. By far, I'm most excited about our play room.  This room comes right off the kitchen, and it used to be our master bedroom.  Now, we have our books and toys in it which keeps our living room so. much. cleaner.  This room will eventually become our homeschool room with some minor improvements in a couple of years.  In the meantime, we are enjoying the extra space to play ...
